Population Growth

Population records of Tagbilaran City dated back to the year 1948 with a recorded 16,051 persons. In 1970 after 22 years, the population doubled to 33,005 people. It doubled up for the second time in 1995 with 66,683. In the year 2012 the city’s population is expected to double for the third time with a projected 123,263 people computed at a growth rate of 2.8 between the intercensal years of 1990-1995.

A noticeable growth rate of 5.01 was recorded between 1960 and 1975 which was mainly attributed to the social unrest in Mindanao wherein most Boholano migrants there returned home, particularly to Tagbilaran City, to seek refuge.

Over the 50-year period from 1948 to 1998 the population of the City of Tagbilaran grew by 58,267 with an average annual growth rate of 3.07%.

As of last year, Barangay Cabawan has relatively the least number of people with only 798 while Barangay Cogon has the most number with a staggering population of 16,228. It is expected that over a 20 year period Cogon’s population shall have reach the 35,000 mark. By that time the city will have a choking population of 150,000.

Rural-Urban Continuum

The rural population accounts 46,207 or 59.47% of the city’s total population while the urban population has 31,493 or 40.53%. In terms of land area, the urban population occupies only 371.2 hectare or 11.35% of the total land area. The rural population occupies 2,898.8 hectares or 88.65%. The urban area has a population density of 84.84 persons to a hectare while the rural area has only 15.94 persons per hectare.
