Mayor Yap opens Plastic Upcycling Facility in Tagbilaran

The Tagbilaran Technology and Innovation Center (TAGBITIC) was launched yesterday in Brgy. Cogon with no less than City Mayor John Geesnell “BABA” Yap, Executive Assistant to the Governor Billy Tongco, City Planning Officer Engr. Estella Margate, ABC President Nick Besas and JICA volunteer Chisato Kanno leading the ceremonies.

The Plastic Upcycling Facility was a financial grant given to the City Government of Tagbilaran under the BuB project of the DILG and DTI. Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided the technical know-how. Used plastics can now be processed in the facility using the heat and cold press machines acquired by the City Government. It should be remembered that one hundred women from Tagbilaran City completed the Skills Training on Waste Material Leaf Manipulation developed at FabLab Bohol last year.

The project which was part of the Bottom-Up Budgeting (BuB) program of the Department of Interior and Local Government(DILG). The Leaf Manipulation Skills Training encouraged the participants from KALIPI and Pantawid Pamilya members to conserve and up cycle wastes through a systematic process. Lead Instructor Leandro Penales, an Industrial Designer working at Fablab under DTI who developed Skin Lamination, said that the participants were trained on production, creativity and quality control. The process mainly involves cutting leaves into various shapes and attaching it to a board using adhesives.

Ma. Elena Arbon, former DTI Provincial Director, was optimistic with the project, specifically with the Plastic Upcycling, a new marketing trend which is slowly gaining ground in the industry. The strength of which capitalizes on environment driven materials which is very relevant with the advent of unusual weather phenomena such as global warming and climate change. Arbon further explained that this is just the beginning of a journey towards identifying the niche of Bohol in marketing its product for tourists. The plastic sheets which would be produced in the Plastic Upcycling facility will be given to the women who will then turned these into novelty items.
