The night was filled with gorgeous ladies from all over Bohol. 14 beautiful and intelligent candidates sashayed in the catwalk to represent their town for the prestigious title of becoming the Ms. Bohol-Sandugo 2010. The competition was tough, but the ladies came prepared. The question and answer portion sounded like a lecture of seasoned pros. The judges had a hard time defining who could represent the province. All the girls had beauty and brains. But of course, they have to choose. Each of the girls chose a judge that would ask them a question. The 14 candidates were trimmed down to seven. From the seven responses, three smart and witty ladies gained a spot in the top three, Ms. Tagbilaran’s Fer Mary Baliquig, Ms. Tubigon’s Amir Sol and Ms. SK Provincial Federation’s Felisse Marie Carvajal. Their previous scores in the main events were erased; they all went back to zero. The ultimate clincher would be their answer to the Chairman’s final question – “You were born and eventually grew up in Bohol, what was your most unforgettable experience in this province?” The three ladies gave their best. But in the end, one lady stood out. With grace under pressure, Amir Sol wowed the judges with her sincere and humble reply. Amir Sol bested other 13 hopefuls and will represent Bohol. During her reign, Amir is set to advocate her personal stand on Boholano’s culture, cancer awareness and climate change consciousness.

Tagbilaran City, Philippines – Almost 30,000 Tagbilaranons trooped to the Carlos P. Garcia Sports Complex to witness the fight between AJ “Bazooka” Banal and South Korea’s Big Yoo. The spectators were not disappointed. According to sports commentator Ronnie Nathanielz, “The fight can be considered as one of the best in Philippine boxing.” Big Yoo has the height and reach advantage over the Boholano fighter, despite this — Bazooka was unstoppable during the fourth round. Although Banal’s first few punches in the earlier rounds seem weak for the Korean fighter, he instantly regained his confidence during the fourth round when he dished out precise punches to Yoo which ultimately lead to his downfall. Banal is now the WBO Asia Pacific Bantamweight champion.

Also on the main undercard event, Jason Pagara of Cebu ALA gym won a technical knock-out victory against South Korea’s Young Bin. The Korean also has the height and reach advantage over Pagara, but Young Bin suffered a serious blow on his brow in the 2nd round. The referee called off the fight due to the seriousness of the cut. The victory was given to Pagara since the injury was caused by a legal blow.

Mayor Dan Neri Lim is a certified boxing enthusiast and promotes sporting events in Bohol. He continually gives opportunity for local athletes to shine. Mark Monton, the mayor’s executive assistant made sure that the event went smoothly.

Mayor Dan Neri Lim delivered his speech with conviction and fervor last June 30, 2010. During his inaugural speech, the audience was all ears as the city’s incumbent gave his vision for Tagbilaran in the next three years. Fortunately, Tagbilaran’s constituents would still enjoy the mayor’s advocacy programs – his concern towards health and education would not be undermined by development projects. The welfare of the people is still first and foremost on his mind. The main course of the coming administration would be the development of infrastructure projects. First on the list is the Local Water Utilities Administration. According to the Mayor, “It aims to institutionalize a socialized scheme where minimum consumption will be rewarded with free water services. Under this scheme, the rich will practically subsidize the poor which is an equalizer of sorts. This will not only be a relief to cash-strapped families but also a boost to water-conservation efforts.”

A tenement building is another major project for the next three years. Talks are underway if these can be built using public funds, so that the homeless or those who couldn’t afford to buy their own house could live indefinitely under contract. The problem of informal settlers is also a major concern for the City. Thus, a solution is also being discussed. For if left unchecked, this problem could be a disastrous scenario in the future. Expansion of road improvement projects would also take center stage in the next three years. It will include the rehabilitation of drainage systems to eliminate flooding; this will also include the installation of street lights in the City’s major road to ensure peace and order.

The waste treatment facility which was already prioritized during the last leg of his term will also be given much attention today. The mayor also announced the massive overhaul of the Dao-Dampas public market and bus terminal. It will be the center piece of the modern Tagbilaran. It hopes to render a major facelift to the City — a three-storey modern building will rise to house the wet market in the first level, restaurants and coffee shops in the second.

To generate funds for the City Government, the local administration will also adapt a comprehensive tax compliance program under the expert guidance of Dr. Nick Fontanilla of the Asia Pacific Centre for Research. To quote Mayor Dan: “In these difficult times, local government units can no longer rely on traditional tax measures but have to be creative in generating revenues to cope with the increasing expenditures for social services.”

Various programs like the No Smoking Campaign, Landscaping of the City Hall grounds and Skills training for out-of-school youths and jobless adults will also be in place.

But the mayor has issued this challenge: “To achieve these goals, we need to have discipline. I find that the great thing in this world is not so much where we stand, as in what direction we are moving,” Oliver Wendell Holmes once wrote. He got it right. You can only make a stand when you know which way you are going.
